My Canadian/British hubby

It's been a busy week. First things first, on Wednesday my patriotic Canadian DH became part British and gained citizenship to Britain. He had to go to a citizenship ceremony, meet the provost (the guy in the picture) and affirm allegiance to the Queen. This is what he had to say:
I (name) do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her Heirs and Successors, according to law.
Pledge
I will give my loyalty to the United Kingdom and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and obligations as a British citizen.

It's not as easy thing for a patriotic Canadian to do! I think i'd find it hard if i had to do this in Canada (no offence meant to any Canadians obviously). I must say in this day and age i think it's pretty dumb to have to affirm your allegiance to the Queen. I think i would have an issue having to do that and i am British; born and bred. Don't get me wrong, im proud to be British but i think royalty doesn't hold the place that it used to in this country (which doesn't bother me) and this kind of allegiance pledge is so irrelevant. I think the funniest thing about the above picture is that there is supposed to be a picture of the Queen in the background but the guy behind Matthew is blocking out her head LOL.

Last night i went to my first quilting class with my mum. There were 12 ladies there and i couldn't believe it when i met my neighbour in there. She's my age and i see her quite often and never even knew we shared this interest! She even has a sewing machine! I was so glad to have someone my age there at the class, my friend was supposed to be coming but she had to pull out. Anyway, last night was a general introduction to quilting. Rita (the class leader) showed us what we will be making over the next 10 weeks. We're going to be making a tablerunner for Christmas and the design she has chosen will incorporate all the basic techniques we will need for quilting. I can't remember all the technical names yet though! So, we had to pick out and buy our fabric last night. Here's what i chose
The red starry piece will be the big main border. The stripey piece will be the inner border and then i have 3 fat quarters for all the squares/triangles/strips etc that will be in the middle. It took us all ages to choose our fabric. Im happy with my selection anyway!

So, quiltorstitch I may just be coming your way for advice in the near future!

Im not looking forward to my weekend ahead as i have to go away for work again. I hate going away overnight for work. This time, one of the young people i work with is taking part in some training. She has a 3 year old and doesn't want to go alone with her (which is fair enough). So as im her support worker, im going too. It's going to be hard work looking after her 3 year old all weekend. We leave this afternoon and will be there until Sunday. Wish me luck!

Well, congratulations to your DH on his dual citizenship. I would take that, if I could, but the US won't allow it. :( And I simply can't make myself give up citizenship to the country I was born in - that's just too weird.

Sounds like becoming a British citizen is a lot more complicated than when my DH got his citizenship but that was probably over 10 years ago!

Quilting class sounds fantastic!

Have a lovely weekend.

Congrats to your DH on his dual citizenship!

I love the fabric you chose for your table runner. I'd really like to learn to quilt some day. I'm lucky to have an LNS/LQS right across the street from me now so I hope that I'll be able to take a class from them one day. (I don't know where I'll fit a sewing machine in our condo though, lol!)

Congratulations to your DH!! I will eventually (probably) will have to become a U.S. Citizen at some point, but my country of origin allows dual citizenship, although after becoming a U.S. citizen I will have to apply to become a filipino as well, to obtain dual. It's kinda weird back and forth LOL.

Your fabbies are pretty. How is the class? I hope you enjoyed it!

Hey! I'm back sorry for the absence. Congrats to your hubby! As for the quilting ... Yeah! I love it, but haven't had much time for crafts lately. However, Christmas is the best kind of crafts so enjoy. I want to stitch/quilt a tree skirt eventually. Kind of a patchwork look that incorporates both, but I can't wait to see your project. Post pics often!

Congratulations to your DH on his new citizenship. My sister just gave up her Canadian citizenship and became a US citizen. As Barbara said, they won't accept dual citizenship and this was necessary for her because of some finacial matters. I'd find it hard myself.
I love your fabric choices for the runner. I'm looking forward to your progress. Good luck on your weekend away!

Congratulations to your DH. Reminds me of what my DH had to do last year when he becuase an Australian/American.

I love the fabric you picked for your runner. I can't wait to hear about and see your progress.

Congrats to your hubby!
I love the fabric you chose out, that's my only BIG problem with quilting or changing things in cross stitching - I have no eye for color. I usually have to let Kelly pick it out and shopping with my mother is the same so I must get it from her.
Can't wait to see your table runner - I'm sure it's going to look gorgeous!

Congrats to your hubby! I know what you've getting at about the royal family. It was only in the 90s that Australia removed mention of the queen from our citizenship pledge - and we're on the other side of the world.

Beautiful fabby for the quilting class, I'm looking forward to hearing about your progress.

Yay for your dh!!! Your fabrics you have chosen are perfect. Is it costing a lot to do the course if you don't mind me asking? I think its something I'd like to get into in the future. xx

Whoo Hoo for DH! Big step!

I'm with you 100% on the Royalty thing. I'm born and bred too and I can guarantee I wouldn't take that pledge.

Don't know if my being Scottish has anything to do with it, but for whatever the reason...I wouldn't be keen.

Congratulations to your DH on his dual citizenship. I was talking to a friend the other day who is going to Canada, & apparently he has to give up his Scotish citizenship to be Canadian? Is that right?

So next step is babies, huh? ;)

Congratulations to your husband, that is great :)

I love your fabrics! They are so cute. I have found that taking your time when you are learing is the best way to go. I tried doing too many things and got frustrated with it :) So just enjoy your tablerunner. I am here for advice! :D

It's good you found somebody your age who likes to sew too, and your neighbor at that! Enjoy!

Congrats to your Hubby. That's a bit step to become a citizen of antoher country. As a Canadian I'd have to think long and hard about it. We're pretty proud of being Canadian.
